Every Pure Agua install starts with a free in-home water test, and we run it before anyone touches your plumbing. The test takes about 20 minutes at your kitchen sink. We measure total hardness in grains per gallon (gpg), free chlorine versus total chlorine (the gap reveals chloramines on OUC homes), pH, iron, hydrogen sulfide where the rotten-egg smell is reported, and total dissolved solids (TDS). On private wells we add a bacterial screen and a manganese check.

Why this matters: Central Florida hardness varies block by block. Kissimmee on Toho frequently reads 12 to 22 gpg straight from the Floridan Aquifer. Orange County blends sources and often runs 8 to 14 gpg. Seminole County pockets test as soft as 6 gpg. A 14 gpg home and a 22 gpg home need different softener capacities, so we size from your numbers, not a county average. We leave a one-page test report on the counter so you can compare quotes if you choose to. About 30 percent of homeowners we test do not need a softener at all (Seminole pockets, recent reverse osmosis at the utility, very low-water-use households), and we say so on the spot.

The test also flags red-flag conditions that change the install plan. Iron above 0.3 mg/L moves you to an air-injection oxidizer ahead of the softener. A pH below 6.8 (occasionally seen on shallow surficial wells in southeast Osceola) calls for a calcite neutralizer before any softener resin, because acidic water leaches copper from your supply lines and dissolves softener resin from underneath. Hydrogen sulfide above 1 mg/L is no longer an "aesthetic" issue and requires aeration plus catalytic carbon. Equipment selection (softener, carbon, iron staging, RO)

• Whole-house carbon backwash filter for chlorine and chloramines. OUC primarily delivers free chlorine; Toho delivers chloramines, which require catalytic carbon (standard GAC will not strip ammonia). For OUC homes a standard high-grade GAC bed is fine; for Toho we always specify catalytic.
• Iron staging for the outlying Osceola and Lake County wells that read above 0.3 mg/L iron or above 0.05 mg/L manganese. This is usually an air-injection oxidizer ahead of the softener or a dedicated greensand filter.
• Under-sink reverse osmosis at the kitchen, NSF/ANSI 58 certified for TDS, lead, and PFAS reduction. We pair RO with NSF/ANSI 61 tubing and a lead-free faucet.

Central FL-specific considerations

What makes Central Florida different from a generic "whole-house" install:

Floridan Aquifer chemistry. The aquifer's limestone bed loads water with calcium and magnesium, and in pockets, with hydrogen sulfide. A correctly programmed softener handles both; a 32,000-grain residential unit will not. We size up.

Utility-specific disinfection. OUC runs free chlorine; carbon removes it quickly. Toho Water Authority runs chloramines (chlorine plus ammonia), which require catalytic carbon and longer contact time. Well water in outlying counties. Eastern Osceola, southern Lake, and parts of unincorporated Orange County run on private wells. Iron and hydrogen sulfide complicate the install (oxidation stage required) and a bacterial screen is mandatory before you skip municipal disinfection. The install timeline (8 AM to ~1 PM)

A typical Pure Agua Enterprises Team install runs five hours door to door. Here is the standard sequence:

8:00 AM, arrival and walkthrough. Two-technician crew confirms the install location (garage, utility closet, or exterior pad), staging area, and the route from the water main to the appliance. We lay drop cloths and floor protection on any indoor runs.

8:20 AM, main shutoff and pressure bleed. Main valve is closed at the meter or backflow preventer. Lines drain via a downstream hose bib. We check static and dynamic pressure here, because Central Florida service lines occasionally read above 80 psi and a pressure-reducing valve gets added if needed.

9:00 AM, bypass loop and brine drain. The bypass loop is the most important plumbing decision in the install. It lets the homeowner isolate the softener for service, regeneration troubleshooting, or future media replacement without shutting off house water. Brine drain is run to the nearest approved discharge (laundry standpipe, dedicated condensate line, or an exterior gravel pad where code allows).

10:30 AM, equipment set and connections. Tanks set, control valve threaded, brine tank filled with the first 80 lb of solar salt, RO under-sink unit mounted on the cabinet wall and tied to the cold supply and drain saddle.

11:30 AM, controller programming. We program the valve for your measured hardness with a 20 percent capacity reserve. Regen frequency is metered, not timed, so the unit only regenerates after consuming its capacity. We label the bypass valve, brine drain, and shutoff in a way the homeowner can identify a year later.

12:30 PM, leak test and walkthrough. Every joint is wiped, pressurized, and re-checked at 15 minutes and again at 45 minutes. We rerun the hardness test at the kitchen tap to confirm zero gpg (or your target post-softening reading), then walk you through salt refill, bypass operation, RO filter-change interval, and the annual service we include.

1:00 PM, leave-behind. Owner's manual, warranty card, salt-fill instructions, your before/after water test card, and a magnet with our service line.

Two notes on this timeline. First, the 8 AM start is by design: we want sealed joints to cure during the warmest hours of a Central Florida day, which catches any pinhole leak by the time the walkthrough begins. Second, we never leave a homeowner with a partially commissioned system. If a part arrives wrong, if a fitting cracks during pressure test, or if the panel detects a fault during programming, we either complete the install that day with a swap from the truck or restore the home to pre-install plumbing and reschedule. Permits and plumbing code

Florida Plumbing Code (FBC-P), adopted from the International Plumbing Code, governs every water-treatment install in the state. Three practical points:

• Permits. City of Kissimmee and City of Orlando both require a plumbing permit when an install ties into the main supply or creates a new drain. Permit fees run $40 to $120 depending on jurisdiction and are pulled by Pure Agua, not the homeowner. Unincorporated Osceola and Orange County permitting is similar in scope.
• Backflow protection. Brine and RO drain lines must be air-gapped per code (no direct connection to a sanitary line). We use an approved air-gap fitting at the laundry standpipe or condensate line.
• HOA approval. If your equipment lives outside on a side pad, many HOAs require a screening enclosure or specific paint color. We check the HOA letter before drilling. If the pad has to be inside the garage, that drives the conduit run and may add an hour to the install.

• Private well, no recent bacterial test. Bacterial contamination requires UV or chlorine disinfection upstream of any softener resin, and that decision needs lab data.
• Multi-zone home or guest house. A loop that feeds two structures or a detached suite requires a manifold rebuild, not a tee, to maintain pressure on both legs.
• Pre-1986 home with original supply lines. Pre-1986 plumbing can include lead solder or galvanized pipe. A softener installed on a corroding line accelerates leaks; we recommend a line replacement or partial replumb first.
• HOA with aesthetic restrictions. Side-yard installs in HOA communities frequently require enclosure plans submitted in advance.
• Water pressure above 80 psi or below 40 psi. High pressure damages resin tanks and RO membranes; low pressure starves them. A pressure regulator or booster pump may be required before the install.
• Visible iron staining plus sulfur smell on a well. This is a multi-stage build (oxidation, filtration, softening), not a single-tank job.

How long does a whole-house install take in Central Florida?

Salt-free template-assisted crystallization (TAC) systems precipitate hardness into a non-scaling crystal form. They do not soften water (the hardness number does not drop), and they perform inconsistently above 20 gpg or with chlorinated feed.
