This is a common question in the Osceola and Polk County service area, where private wells frequently present hardness, iron, and manganese together. The short answer: usually yes, and the equipment order is critical to getting both stages working correctly.
Manganese above roughly 0.5 mg/L (and iron above 1 mg/L) will coat water softener resin beads with metal oxides over time, reducing their ion exchange capacity and eventually requiring expensive acid cleaning or resin replacement.
